About the Australian Citizenship Test

The Australian Citizenship Test is a mandatory step for most people applying for Australian citizenship by conferral. The test assesses your knowledge of Australia, its values, history, and system of government.

1. Purpose and eligibility

The test checks whether applicants have a basic understanding of Australian values, democratic principles, rights, responsibilities, history and national institutions.

Most applicants aged between 18 and 59 applying for citizenship by conferral must pass the test, unless they qualify for an exemption.

2. Test format and structure

The test contains 20 multiple-choice questions.

  • Rights and responsibilities of citizens
  • Geography and national symbols

You have 45 minutes to complete the test.

3. Australian values questions

Five questions focus specifically on Australian values, such as freedom of speech, equality, the rule of law and democratic beliefs.

You must answer all five values questions correctly to pass the test.

4. Pass mark

To pass, you must:

  • answer all 5 Australian values questions correctly, and
  • score at least 75% overall.

6. Test centres and booking

The test is taken in person at approved test centres operated by the Department of Home Affairs.

7. On the test day

You must bring valid identification as specified by the Department of Home Affairs. Mobile phones and study materials are not allowed during the test.
